Well my 91 Prado LJ71 overheated other day. The radiator popped and blew fluid all over the engine bay. I was just driving along and a little bit of smoke from the bonnet and the engine just cut off immediately with the temp gage pegged. I also noticed a small hole in the exhaust manifold near where it connects to the engine block after the smoke cleared. After cooling off, I tried to crank it but it would only just turn over and not start. I had it towed to the mechanic and he's gonna have a look in the next couple days.

Knowing the history of the 2L-TE and its propensity to crack the head when overheated, I'm not holding my breath that the head will be ok. I've already started planning what to do next. The following options came up.
-Just replace the head only with the 3L. Is this a good option? Is it just a straight bolt on procedure?
-Engine swap to a 1KZT if I can find one. I know it would cost more, but the increase in power/performance may make the juice worth the squeeze. Also, is it a straightforward swap with everything lining up such as tranny and wiring, etc? Or do I need to buy any special adapter kits etc.?

Many thanks in advance for any info or knowledge you can pass on in my current crisis.

R/S

You must decide whether the extra power and grunt of the 1-KZT engine is worth all the, relative hassle, that sourcing and fitting will entail, especially as you live on a small island.

If you say you want to do it, then sourcing a complete motor that has a suitable engine is the way to go. It will obviously depend on how good you are at being a fitter but you will have lots of parts left over to sell or keep for spares. I dont know what series of Toyota cars you had on the island so you will need to do some research on that matter. If you go for the basic 1-KZT engine you wont have the hassle of having to integrate any electronics into your wiring system.

I cant help you with any knowledge on the 2L-TE.

Thanks Roger. I'm thinking the 1KZ-T will be the answer. I wouldn't be doing it myself. There should be local availability 2nd hand. If not, there are JDM parts dealers on the island but they'd obviously cost more but there would be piece of mind as there is a bit of warranty. Another question is would the 1KZ-TE work as well?
Thanks and Regards,
Jason

The 1-KZT brings with it simplicity. The only electrical connection is to the solenoid on the injector pump to cut of the fuel. The 1-KZTE on the other hand is computer controlled and does have problems with the ECU. There are no power benefits just a slightly smoother shut down.
