On a 1KZTE engine how long should the glow plug light stay on for as mine comes on for a second then goes off. A couple of times it’s struggled to start. It’s already had new glow plugs. Could it be a faulty relay?

On mine, the glowplug light is only on briefly, but it doesn't appear to cause a problem.

I have read that the power to the busbar that powers the glowplugs is actually on longer than the warning light. A simple way to check this is to connect a 12 volt low-wattage light between a glowplug live connection and the motor block and then get someone to turn on the ignition (without cranking the motor). The light will show you how long the relay is active. I think five to seven seconds is usually enough.

Bob.

What controls the glow plug relay as the relay came on for a second then I cycled the ignition and it stayed on for about 5 seconds and is now doing this all the time.

The light on mine goes out after a few seconds but the plugs stay on for up to a minute after the engine has started

On the Surfs the plugs come on at 12v for a few seconds, time depends on outside temperature, then they reduce down to something like 5v for a while, sort of two stage starting.

Hi
Can you tell me where the Glow Plug Relay is located? Is it the Relay that acts as a timer for the glow plugs?
Thanks

It's under the bonnet in the relay box situated behind the battery on the driver's side. Not sure if a timer is incorporated in the relay but the plugs should stay on for around 60-90 seconds, the light goes out almost immediately
