Hi all I am looking at purchasing a 2001 vx4.2
Having test driven it I removed the rocker cap and saw moisture puffing from it
This vehicle has been laid up for months at a time owner deceased etc
Same show from dip stick
My buddy who is a half decent mechanic said he wouldn't be overconcerned
Otherwise it has 138 k miles on it
Checked with mot history
Could it be because it's been unused or what do you all think
Thanks in advance

You won't be able to tell much from just starting it from cold. Its probably got condensation in it from standing and mine (also a 2001 4.2 VX) produces wafts of steam from the exhaust when its cold.

It needs a good long run to warm it through.

Preferably, change the oil and filters before the long run  Wink.

(The motor takes 12 litres of oil  Shocked).

Once its hot and has cleared any moisture out you will be able to better judge its condition.

Keep an eye on the engine coolant - and only use 'Toyota Red' anti-freeze. If that starts disappearing there may be a problem but these motors are not known for cooling problems (unlike the 3.0 litre 1KZ-TE models found in the '90-Series').

Let us know how you get on.

Bob.

Thanks Bob,
The exhaust side of things is fine but it was after a run to warm it up it was showing out of the rocker cover and or the dipstick
Looked just like moisture
It seems to be on a beat like a piston stroke or I might be over thinking it

I would say that if you take the oil filler cap off any engine that's running you will get fumes and a spattering of oil  Wink.

There should be a breather pipe from the Cam Box Cover leading to the suction side of the Turbocharger (from imperfect memory). That should stop any fumes from the motor appearing around the Cambox cover under normal use.

As the car has been standing for some time I think it will need more than just a quick warm-up run to clear all the condensation out. If it is still showing signs of water in the block after a few days use it may be time to start worrying.

I would give it an oil change before thinking the worst though.

I drove mine a few miles this morning - towing a Horse Trailer. The oil pressure sits just above the half-way point at 55mph (pointing to the oil can handle!). Its at the half-way point at 30mph and drops down to the lowest mark at tick-over.

I use Castrol 10W40 as its primarily a towing vehicle with 138,000 miles on the clock.

You may find that yours has 5W30 in it which I would consider a bit light for heavy work.

You will get as many opinions as there are respondents and its down to personal choice really. The important thing is to change the oil and filter regularly.

These are big trucks and the cost of changing engine, gearbox, Transfer Box and axle oil in one go is quite high. Its worth doing though.

Tip: don't fill the rear axle to the level plug hole. The book says 1/4 inch below. If you overfill it you will get oil on the handbrake shoes.

Is yours a manual or an Auto (mine's an Auto)??

Bob.

I have always used Comma semi synthetic 15-40 , a lot of people say that 10-40 makes the engine tick, and the last time mine was serviced I had it done by local garage, and guess what it ticked, they said they used 15-40 but I'm sure it wasn't.

Hi all I have now replenished the diesel tank and driven a hundred or so miles without a problem apart from grinding front disc which is being replaced todayx2
I'm also having the timing belt and other belts done as I'm not sure about the  maintenance history
Full service as well
Mechanic says fuel filter was contaminated lots of *beep* in it
It starts instantly from cold but ticks over rough until I drive it
He reckons it could be an injector playing up
So I might try one of these fuel /injector treatments
Fitted 4 new Michelin s tyres yesterday
Ordered a new towbar and electrics ,
Biggest problem is I lost my spare wheel locally but can't find it so I have to source another from somewhere incas any one has one lying about they would sell

Hi all I now have put about 4 k on her and we still have a lumpy tickover from cold
And black smoke under load
I. Thinking maybe an injector
I might buy one and do a swap out
Or get diagnostic s carried out
I have purchased a tech stream copy so we will see as soon as I can use it

Hi Bob,

I have just changed my coolant, there is a factory sticker in engine compartment that says, use only Toyota Pink Super Long Life Coolant , and change at 90,000, when you said use Red did you mean Pink, as the Red is only Long Life, my LC 100 is 2004 perhaps the early LC 100 only used Red coolant, or can you use either?
