Hi, i had to top up almost a litre of oil after 3000 miles. Can anyone shed some light on this?

Finding it hard to respond to this one. Which engine do you have, how many miles has it done, has it just started this behaviour? are there any obvious leaks or excess exhaust smoke? All I can tell you is my 190,000 mile petrol V6 doesn't use a drop although it does leak a little at the cam covers but this never seems to drop the level between annual services.
