Well this has been interesting.
My 120 runs well, no smoke no oil usage and pulls like a train, but it can sound a bit rattly (to me, though other 4x4 owning friends comment on how quiet it is) when you come off the power at around 2k rpm, and on a cold start the oil pressure light takes about 1 to 2 seconds to go out.
Up till now i've been using 5W40 fully synthetic, two high quality brands, these oils like most these days are suitable for petrol and Diesel engines, and neither are cheapies, oil changed twice a year at less than 5k miles.
For a while i've had the nagging feeling of returning to Diesel specific oil, confess i'm not that keen on 5W30, rightly or wrongly it feels far too thin to me, and 5W40 in Diesel specific form is like rocking horse poo.
I've had good experience with Exol oils before (a make used extensively in the commercial field), and on the Bay of E they offer 20 litre drums of 10W40, called Optima Vimax Diesel 10w40, a semi synthetic blend, obviously not meant for later DPF equipped vehicles hence the bargain price of £46 for a 20 litre drum.
Well i've changed the oil, together with another new Wix filter from my bulk bought stock.
Result, engine quieter, noticeably so, and the oil light now goes out instantly regardless of how long the vehicle has been stood.
I had similar rattly engine symptoms years ago on my 70 series with the 3.0 Diesel lump, it sounded dreadful, so bad that i visited the Toyota dealer for a diagnosis..oil had been in 1000 miles at this point.
Dealer tech diagnosed major crank problems, @ serious money.
Something wasn't right here, it had only covered about 50k miles at this point, so i drove over to the non main dealer Toyota specialist at Collyweston (Stamford) , sadly no longer in business, the head tech there used to prepare and rally 70 series LC's offroad so if anyone would know what was the issue he would, he came out revved the engine up and listened then told me in no uncertain terms to drain that **** out of the sump and put some proper oil in, not wishing to be sued for every penny i don't have i won't name the oil in question because the maker is very well known.
I changed that oil as told, lo and behold a quiet lovely smooth engine back again, ran that car for many years without a single problem, and the engine still sounded sweet.
Now i know Mr T recommends 5W30 according to the book (though a broad range of viscosities are also acceptable), but is the lower figure slightly too low for our engines i am beginning to wonder?
Thoughts please. |

Hi Juddian.
I've been running 10W40 for the past two oil changes and I'm also really happy with it. When it was freshly put in I also noticed that it seemed quieter.
10W40 suits the temperature range where I live perfectly - i'm close to Greece, so it can get to like 40 degrees in the high summer, but in the winter it also allows me to take the LC up the mountain in -25 temps.
I used Castrol GTX Ultraclean last time; which is a semi-synthetic lubricant, I believe. |

Hi
On the subject of 2stroke oil in diesel I mixed this in my 2 diesel vehicles aswell for quite a while till I read a report that most 2stroke oil contains zinc which over a period of time fouls the injector tips with zinc deposits I personally have stopped using it but many people still do.

Well its been a few weeks now and the engine is still noticeably quieter than before i started using this slightly thicker Diesel specific engine oil.
I'm not going to say it's a magic cure for the cold running rattles that many of these engines suffer, but during this late mild spell when in built up areas where noise is going to reflect i've had the windows open listening intently and it's been lovely listening to that slight turbo whine as it spools up and the smooth sounds coming from the motor.
No rattles no clattering. |

Sounds good!
It's almost oil change time. I found that there is only one distributor of Exol oils in Bulgaria, but I've contacted them and hopefully they will come up trumps!
Thanks for the steer, Juddian! |
