|

Decided to have a look at my rear hinges
What I found is that the common "Wear" is not the holes wearing, but they obviously have a bit of braded bronze or similar folded bush between the inner part of the hing and the hinge pin.
I carefully ground the riveted end back to size and pressed it out and you could see what was left of the bush. It's like a "top hat" bush rolled into the hole and folded flat between the two parts of the hinge.
I cut a small bit of nylon pipe (happened to have some kicking around and used it to re-bush the inner plate, and put a thin stainless washer between the two plates to take up the slack, and pressed the pin back in and it seems lovely and tight/smooth again.
Posting as I'm surprised how they are bushed, I guess to stop them squeaking, I did also note the later Prado has a different part number and wonder if the bushes were upgraded? |

Top tip. No apparent wear in mine after 200,000m despite carrying an oversize MT tyre, but nothing lasts for ever so I'll bear in mind for the future _________________ 1997 KZJ90 3.0d, 2" suspension lift, 235/85/16 Cooper STT Pros. 217k hard miles |

Yeah the strip used to fold the bush was half out on mine and a tiny amount of play, what year is yours? I wonder if maybe you have the newer part number/maybe better bush?
But the wear reported is definitely the bush worked its way out in most cases I suspect... I carry a BFG A/T on my spare (I'm convinced they are twice the weight of normal tyres LoL)..... and occasionally fit a home made bike rack on which bolts onto the middle bolt of the spare wheel hanger (so I can open the rear door with the bikes on... very handy! |

No, mine's an early one. But a lot of factors will determine how quickly/slowly a bush wears in such circumstances. I've no idea how the thing was treated by former owners (IIRC there were eleven before me!) before I got it at 140,000 miles. Maybe they didn't use the rear door much. _________________ 1997 KZJ90 3.0d, 2" suspension lift, 235/85/16 Cooper STT Pros. 217k hard miles |
