On my 2000 Amazon 4.2 straight 6 diesel, I have an annoying problem in that when i go to start the engine all is ok when i turn the key through the positions until the start position then no power is available at all, i turn the key back wait a little while and then it starts OK, obviously some electrical issue but where do you start tracking this down, it may happen 1 out of say 10 starts but i am concerned it will get worse and not start at all.

I'm not sure what your saying, is it when you turn to engage the starter and nothing happens, or is it no lights on dash when just turned on.

I'd put a test light (or meter) on the starter solenoid feed at the starter motor and have somebody turn the key (obviously take care to be clear of anything of the engine starts). I f there is a reliable feed from the ignition switch but still no start I'd suspect the starter solenoid contacts and plunger are worn out. Mine gave up after 180,000 miles in a similar fashion of occasionally failing to start and then giving up altogether. Replacement parts are less than £20 and it's a pretty easy job once the starter is out - many Youtube videos available.

If the feed to the starter motor is intermittent it could be a defective ignition switch or the wiring from it or maybe a loose earth strap between the engine and the bodywork.

Do you have a link to a 100 series 4.2 diesel  starter replacement video, they all seem to be the V8 petrol version, what a nightmare that is, i was surprised i got no clicking of solenoid so do you think that means it is gone altogether or more likely an electrical issue relay etc.

I'd do some electrical testing first or you'll just be guessing at what the problem is. Once the starter motor is out they're pretty similar to take apart so I wouldn't search too hard for your exact model. The inline engines usually have easier access to the motor than the Vs so I'd think getting it out if needs be is reasonably straightforward (famous last words!). I have a 90 series with the V6, which was a bit of a pig to get out.

well checked the electrics and all seemed OK, decided to try impact technology so hit the starter on the end with a lump hammer, engine now started, so sticking soleniod is the issue , any fixes without removing starter

These guys were great when I needed parts for my starter. All they need is the number on the case if the starter.
