Hi I have a Land Cruser Colorado with a 1KZTE Engine it’s a manual gearbox. I am experiencing a shudder when setting off in first gear but only when the engine is warm when the engine is cold I don’t feel it ! the clutch has only done about 1000 miles Please could someone give me some advice many thanks Phil |

Hi Phil,
First thoughts could be contamination of clutch plate due to leaking rear crankshaft oil seal or first motion shaft gearbox seal.(Should have been fairly obvious when gearbox out)
Difficult to asses with little detail, was previous clutch just worn out or other issues.
Was complete new 3 piece kit fitted or just centre plate?
Regards,Dai. |

Thanks for the reply. I changed clutch plate and pressure plate and thrust bearing. Seal seemed ok The odd thing is that it is absolutely fine for about the first 15 minutes but then get the shudder only in first gear on takeoff! |

Approaching this sideways, two possibilities might account for the 'only when warm' nature of the fault:
1. It's the clutch but because gearbox oil is more viscous until it gets warm it serves to mask the shudder (seems unlikely that the effect would be big enough);
2. It's not the clutch, but the engine lacks power and causes the judder (in the way that some engines can cut out - or nearly cut out - when setting off from a junction). Not felt when cold because the engine automatically idles higher when cold, masking the effect.
I love a bit of blue sky thinking! But I can't see why a clutch fault would only occur when the engines warm if you've ruled out a leak. _________________ 1997 KZJ90 3.0d, 2" suspension lift, 235/85/16 Cooper STT Pros. 217k hard miles |

I’ve had a go at cleaning the throttlebody and the shudder Seems to have reduced so I’m wondering if I might need new injectors as my car has done 200,000 miles ! And like you said it may be a lack of power |

Not saying it's your problem, but I had a problem where it almost stalled when pulling away. I can't remember what promted me to do it but the problem completely disappeared when I cleaned up the earth point from the battery to the inner wing. It was very corroded _________________ 1997 KZJ90 3.0d, 2" suspension lift, 235/85/16 Cooper STT Pros. 217k hard miles |

After watching lots off 1KZTE engines on YouTube I have come to realise that’s on tick over my engine shakes a lot !
I’m wondering if this is the cause off the shoulder when setting off ps this only happens when the engine has warmed up |

In the end I can only assume it is a flywheel problem maybe slightly warped so after talking to a friend who advised me to try slipping the clutch in third gear whilst setting off I can only assume this puts a bit of a polish on the clutch plate That stops it grabbing so hard. And I am pleased to say it has drastically reduced the shudder to a point it is hardly noticeable I don’t know how long this will last but at least I know when I next change the clutch I will buy a new flywheel as well. |

Thanks for the update. Not a problem or a solution that I've heard of before! So I guess you don't notice it when the engine is cold because the raised idle speed turns the flywheel that little bit faster allowing it to balance out the juddering. _________________ 1997 KZJ90 3.0d, 2" suspension lift, 235/85/16 Cooper STT Pros. 217k hard miles |
