Hi all, can anyone help with this please, when towing up hill in 5th gear on the motorway the engine will not rev over 2500 rpm and slowly loses speed, it has similar problems when towing a lower speeds and in lower gears again on steep hills, I took her to the garage and there are no faults on the ecu or gearbox. Hills that I normally go over at 55 to 60 mph are now down to 30mph. When I'm not towing the car feels fine most of the time but you can tell it’s not quite right when the engine is under load. The best way i can describe it is that the engine has developed a flat spot.....

There is no black smoke coming out even though my foot is hard down, the car has 174,500 miles on the clock.

Many thanks in advance

Is it a manual or auto?  Have you tried cleaning the MAF sensor?

As Karl has said and also check MAP filter is not cracked  and  leaking and losing boost pressure giving a wrong reading to the Map sensor , or blocked Map filter or could even be faulty faulty Map sensor by being a too dirty Map sensor ,

And just had a thought also check the push  link rod at the side of the egr cooler that operates the EGR valve is not stuck in the open position ,  check this by pushing the rod up and down when the engine is NOT running the link rod should always go back in the down position when you let go when you push it upwards ,

Also I think the general advice is to not use 5th for towing on an auto!

See if TM and Tony agree with that!

Just noticed, as raised by Karl, your towing in d4 on the auto box.?
Whoa ! It will hunt for gears as per terrain and conditions, just leave it in D and let the auto box work as it should. You will use more diesel towing in d4 in your situation too.
If you have a good long run on a motorway without too many obstructions/ long hills where you can maintain a good head of steam,  maybe drop it in d4. Reading the road as far as possible will help determine that. 🙄

Fuel filter, as per Juddian. Undo the drain tap on filter housing to see if any sh/t or water comes out that may give indication.
