|
|
Hi all
If you read my previous post you will see I am questioning whether any other LC gear and transfer box will fit my LC5, I know the other boxes dont have the electronic control box on the rear of them but will they fit and work?
when i opened the trans box up two big circlip looking things a brass ring and 3 little metal blocks fell out!! they are not chewed up so i think they can just go back in but does anyone know how they fit, as in which way round what goes first etc any pictures would be great.
Is there a decent manual for these cars, a haynes or something like that, im looking for a good tow veheicle if anyone has anything at the moment?
What do you think mine is worth without a box in it, its been loved, just had new front wheel bearings done, cambelt done, regular oil and filter and its done 173K aircon didnt work but windows did any help with my problems will be gratefully received
Many thanks Glyn |

To be honest would you buy a a 2004 LC5 120 manual with 173k miles with a duff or missing manual gearbox and transfer case not working due to missing parts if this 120 was not your car , my guess if I saw it for sale would lead me to think its being used to tow more weight than it can handle or had been neglected in gearbox oil servicing or the gearbox had leaked oil and still being driven with very little oil in the gearbox ,and at 173k miles I would be wondering if the tems shocks have been changed and if the rear air suspension has also been changed or replaced with coil springs as at that age as if it had being used to tow heavy loads at that mileage it would have taken its toll on the TEMS SHOCKS and rear Air Suspension and also at that mileage if the car has had new injectors and if so were they fitted with the right preparation or was they done by a cowboy and if was the case they will need redoing again soon . so as it stands you are better off getting it fixed if you want to sell it or expect some one just to offer you just scrap value for it . |

Hi
Ive had it 5 years and only towed my caravan with it 3 times a year, before that same bloke had it for 10 years and looked after it, ive got masses of service paperwork, and ive done the gear and trans oils since ive had it and only done about 30k in it. rear suspension i changed to coil springs in feb this year. I thought these cars were tough but obviously not.
Had a P38 range rover with over 200k on it and was still going strong, wish id kept it now, i will just have to put a box in it, if someone can answer that question about what fits, its far to good to scrap |

These cars are tough but if abused by a previous owner or their staff what do you expect from any car , your 120 is 18 years and unless you have owned it or was the only user in all those 18 years and know truly know yourself it HAS been looked after and not been used and abused to tow excess loads etc , you can not take as gospel that it has been looked after by its previous owners and or their drivers like you have done in the 5 years you have had it just because they said so , the proof is in the pudding so to speak , ask yourself how many well looked after 120s have needed a new gearbox at 173k miles , trail all the pages on this forum over all these years and see how many people have had their gearbox go like yours has done , I have not looked to find out but my guess is not many if any at all , even a toyota yaris gearbox would be still working fine at that mileage unless it were misused . you are either incredibly unlucky in your gearbox failing or as I stated above about its use by previous drivers or owners use of the vehicle . |

In my opinion if it costs £2000 to fix and refit the gearbox then the vehicle is worth about £3000 less than the trade price before it packed in provided you can find the right buyer. That may mean near zero! I've sold a fair few vans in this state. Not unusual for gearboxes to pack in even when not used for towing, but the drivers probably have a lot to do with it. BMW's, Audi's etc frequently fail anytime over 125,000 largely because of their 'sealed for life' policy on oil. Of course the oil lasts the life of the gearbox, it's just a very short life. As proven by the fact that if you change the oil they last much longer! Same for 1 series diffs.
In your part of the country I would phone round the breakers particularly those who advertise LC spares on the 'bay. If too rare or expensive then look for a gearbox specialist with a view to fixing the one you have albeit with the casing issue to sort too. I can ask the guys at my work down at Nottingham if they can recommend anyone. Usually anything is possible it's a case of the cost to do it.
I found a free pdf service and repair manual online, it's not great but useful to see how things are put together. Only covers about half the car and very few internals! After all it was free! If there's a PM facility I can try to send it over. I'll probably buy a better download off e-bay sometime. |

Hi All
Me again!! still trying to locate a gearbox for my car, Ive tried one out of an LC4 I think it was at £650 and it doesnt fit so if anyone wants one of these Ive got one for sale, the hi/lo selecter is about 4inch further back, so a no go, if anyone tells you different believe me, had some bad dealings with a company in Birmingham, but cant mention names due to legal reasons, just be careful of breakers in this area, do research first, I didnt!!
Having opened up the manual box it looks like its took the edge off of two cogs, so if anyone has any internals they dont want please contact me. I dont seem to be able to find a parts catalogue anywhere, a old microfish picture would be good, it seems there are so many variants its untrue, why on earth would you make a gearbox so different the centre console must also be different, it seems mental to me but thats the problem i have.
If it has to go so be it but would like to see it back on the road as its still a lovely car, but as spare or repair would £2500 be asking to much? its had plenty of new parts recently and the history is extensive.
Cheers Glyn |

I just had a thought , is your manual 5speed or 6speed because I think somewhere along the line there were 5speed manual and then updated to 6speed , you may have bought the wrong speed box to fit your car . |

Hi mate
Thanks for your time, mines a 5 speed and I've had 4 boxes all turn up the same. All out of LC's apparently but no good. Unless the box has the black actuator box on the back of the transfer box it won't fit. Seems Toyota went to slot of trouble just to electronically select the centre diff lock which apparently is what it does. I don't want to strip the one I've just bought to find out they altered the manual box internals for a laugh.
Cheers Glyn |
