Hi guys,

First post here. My 2005 1KD has started to stall quickly after starting. Mostly after a longer trip of day 45mins. It’ll start and fire right up, run for a couple seconds and then die. I then have to restart but it turns over for 5 seconds before starting. After that it runs perfectly.

Only thing I can think of changing was the fuel filter a few months ago, changed it for a cheapo one from roughtrax, maybe a Toyota one would sort it. Any ideas apart from SCV?

If it was a AMC filter it is not a cheapo filter , AMC oil and fuel filters are oem quality filters , its just that Toyota charge ridiculous sums of money for their filters especialy  their fuel filters . I am thinking if the fuel filter in new and you fitted and primed it properly you could do with looking at the Scv .

Fair enough, it was the AMC one and we did prime it until it went hard before starting perfectly. No issues until a week after, and it hadn’t done it before then which is why I suspected it. May have to look at the SCV, any recommended way of checking it?

If you have the short oridginal version it should be changed anyway as toyota upgraded the short version to the longer type that has a spacer to allow it to fit , if you have the long version your SCV has been upgraded already , look on forbyfour diesel on youtube on Ants channel and type SCV in the search engine and  you can then check what version you have fitted .

Ants videos on youtube called forbyfour diesel are a mine of information , you will find a collection of videos on each subject on the 1KD-FTV  as well as tutorials on servicing repairs on HiLux , 120s and 150s LCs .

Yes I love Antony’s vids, I’ll check out the SCV ones if that’s the potential culprit.

Quick update for people. Replaced my SCV with the newer longer one and followed Anthony’s vids on YouTube. Vehicle seems to run better but still stalls after starting, as if fuel is running back into the tank. Any more suggestions?

Rob, another crazy idea, start it with the fuel cap off. See if that makes any differemce.
Also you havent got any tiny diesel leaks anywhere ? Prime suspect for that is the filler tube/vent from the cap to the tank, they rust and rot out. Look for wet/damp patches on any rust.

Also the rubber hose that is ribbed in its centre that goes inbetween the filler pipe and fits to the tank are known to harden and crack .

While we're talking rubber (ooer) have a look/feel of the small bore 10mm rubber hoses in/out of the filter. Rubber hoses can rot from the inside and partially collapse, when the engine gets going and the pump is doing it's work the fuel can start flowing freely again.

Tried starting with the cap off and same result, stalls. If I hold the throttle for a few seconds or press the PWR heat button for a few seconds it starts fine. I’ll check for leaks along the fuel pipe and if no further luck, will book into a local specialist to have them inspect.

Any chance of getting any live techstream data when it does it?  ie get the engine live data screen up, and either record it on techstream or as a video on your phone then start the engine and let it fail.

If you can, also do the same when it works fine - then the answer might be in the difference to the two recordings!  Might give us some clues anyway....  eg fual pressure is low, dodgy sensor values somewhere etc.
