I recently fitted new tyres and set them to the handbook pressure - 2.2bar. This gives a reasonable ride generally and the car goes over potholes and similar very nicely. However, it wallows about more than I would like and produces a sick-making ride on poorly maintained roads.

I have reset the tyres to 2.3 bar and found the car much steadier on the road. It still rides over (road) bumps and holes well. I realise that tyre pressure is a compromise and I may regret the harder tyres on dirt tracks.

The tyres are 275/70 on 16 inch rims (rather than the 18 inch rims fitted to later cars).

Has anyone else tried playing with the tyre pressures and with what result? Changing the pressure would impact both handling and tyre wear so there may be various ideas.

I saw an American web forum where much higher pressures were suggested for road use (38-40 psi). The tyres I fitted are not supposed to be used over 44psi so I don't want to go to too high pressures but wondered what the rest of you thought.

Don't know what make of tyre your running, iv'e got michelin synchrone's & run them at 32 psi, get a nice ride, mines not for offroading, it gets used offroad a bit through the summer months to retrieve hot air balloons, but really that's just accross farmers fieds, so the michelins are more for road use, good tyre though.

Tried the factory pressure, which resulted in uneven wear, and less wear along the middle of the tread.
Currently running around 36 psi, varying a bit according to load and conditions.
