Having recently bought a pair of these of a well known internet auction site I have tried on various occasions to fit them with no luck.It would seem that there are 2 small torx screws on the inside of the lower half of the tailgate but the rear lights have so far refused to come out.Has anyone bought /fitted a pair of these recently and, if so, would they care to share their experiences.
Thanx in advance.
Ps the vehicle in the question is a 1998 4.7V8 Fj100 series.

Can you be more specific on the location of the lamps?

When I read you thread first time I assumed you meant the lamps in the rear wings rather than those in the lower tailgate.

The wing mounted lamps are fixed by two screws fitted through the side of the tailgate aperture and then there are two pins on the front edge of each lamp that push into plastic 'sockets' in the body.

The lamps in the tailgate are undone from inside the tailgate once the tailgate inner cover (carpet & hardboard) is prised off. I haven't touched these lamps so I have assumed that there are screws or studs which need to be undone from inside the tailgate box. The cover is a bit fragile so you need to pull out the plastic fixings quite carefully if the board isn't to suffer. A wide bladed screwdriver inserted near each plug will usually prise it out without catastrophic damage but be careful.

The other thing to mention is that the tailgate gets a lot of muddy water thrown at and into it by the backdraft at the rear of the car. This time of year the spray is often salty as well. This makes the tailgate vulnerable to rusting. Any paint damage around the tailgate will increase the risk. If the lamp guards are stainless steel, you get a battery effect between the ordinary steel and the stainless which means the stainless stays rust free while the car falls to pieces! I exaggerate but I hope you see what I mean. I would liberally grease areas where the two parts meet and any screws or bolts pass through the steel. Fill any gaps caused by fitting the guard with mastic. That's stuff like well chewed gum used on cars to plug hole and gaps. If you don't, the spray will fill the tailgate (or rear wings) with salty mud corroding them from the inside.
