The lever to select high or low ratio on my automatic diesel amazon vibrates a lot when traveling at any speed. I am wondering if the universal joints on the prop shafts are worn.

Before getting into panic mode can anyone else tell me if the same is true on their car?

There is no noise or rattling but the knob on the lever feels as if it is attached to an out of balance weight rotating at around 2-300 rpm - i.e. slow enough to feel it as a series of pulses rather than a noise.

I will give the prop shafts a squirt of grease and see if this helps (they were greased last Summer). The vibration is fierce enough to have me worried that the transfer box may get damaged if the vibration continues.

You would usually feel/hear prop shaft vibration through the rest of the car as well not just the shift level. The shift lever on my diesel 80 vibrates a lot but my 100 is a petrol and no vibration.

Thanks

That's reassuring. I still have to grease the U/Js but I won't worry meanwhile

I did give the 2 prop shafts a good greasing and convinced myself that it was a bit better. In reality, the difference is probably very little.

However, thanks again guys for your reassurance on this.
