|
|
Can anyone give me any advice on my 1992 12v auto. Some days it goes like a rocket and other days it is really sluggish. There dunt seem to be any particular pattern(e.g weather conditions, temp etc)to varying power but it is very noticable
Also when it is running well, the gearbox seams much smoother too.I have given it 2 doses of redex injector cleaner(thought it may be an injector sticking)but this has made no difference. The injector pump looks as though it is either new or has been recon'd recently. If i could get it to run like it does when its behaving i would be a very happy bunny, but when it is having an off day it is really sluggish. It is reading 115000miles?
Any ideas?

Hi Paul
Is the thermowax / cold start plunger operating as it should ? Situated on the pump top left. If it stays in sometimes after the vehicle gets warm could be the reason why you sometimes have poor perfornmance. Other than that have you possibly taken on a load of bad deisel from somehere / are air/fuel filters ok. Is there some sediment / water at the bottom of the tank ie is it worse when tank is low?

Dont know if the waxstat is working correctly or at all.Dont even know if its got one?.Dont think its down to bad fuel cos it has been happening since i got the car(6 weeks)and has had loads of fuel since, also some days it goes ok so it isnt a permanent fault. The pump looks quite new?

The pump does look new! The thermowax plunger looks to be open from the pic, when full sized it can just be seen just below the left hand end of the autobox cable. Have you checked the turbo/breather hoses for splits/connection / part blockages. Are the air/fuel filters good? Any air in the fuel line? _________________ Landcruiser HDJ80 Auto 1993 |

The pump looks like it's had a rebuild, judging by the paint on the screws. Do you know who did it?
As the whole running of the engine is controlled solely by the fueling, I would imagine the injectors or pump are causing problems. Spanners suggests checking all the hoses, filter etc, which is good advice. However, even with problems in any of those areas, I would imagine it would stll run reasonably well.
I reckon you need the help of a diesel specialist to get the pump off and checked out. |

Agree with you Dave but it is the running well some of the time that puzzles me. If the fuelling was out it should run badly all of the time. Leads me to think it is a loose connector or hose split that acts up intermittently maybe under certain conditions i.e. warm / cold / uneven road surface that shows up the fault more. Would be worth a check before taking it to a w/shop which may well be last call. _________________ Landcruiser HDJ80 Auto 1993 |

There dunt seem to be any particular conditions when it happens. That is what made me think it was possibly an injector sticking.Shame really cos when its running ok it pulls like a train.Dont know who did the injector pump or why it was done.Going to put a set of filters on it this week to eliminate them, plus i dont know when they were fitted. Will have a check round all the hoses too

Well,i seem to have sorted it .Took the injectors out and had them tested,2 were found to be knackered so i had new nozzles fitted(£100 ).I then replaced the 2 rubber hoses under the bonnet with clear hose(fuel line-filter and filter-pump) and got a strange result-when revved got a stretched bubble in the filter-pump hose .Then i realised that it couldnt be air because there was none getting in the fuel line pipe.Turned out that the strainer filter in the tank was bunged up with sh*te and starving the pump of fuel when it was revved.Cleaned this out and blew the lines through and now it goes much better
Told the guy at the fuel injection place what i had found and he said it may have put extra strain on the lift pump.He suggested fitting an electric pump in the line to help maintain fuel pressure.Has anyone out there done or heard of this?
If it runs even better i will be well chuffed

Yes I've heard of fitting an inline electric lift pump. Some people swear by it, more so I think for the 24 Valve engine though. _________________ 1999 Land Cruiser Amazon VX Active 4.2TD Auto
