Had all my belts changed recently and after the job was done I was looking at the external belts and realised there seemed to be a spare idler pulley on the right hand side as you look at the engine. Its outside the belts and very close but not touching. There is no apparant adjustment on it.  I hadn't noticed it before - anyone any idea what its for?

I think it's OK. Mine is about the same.

When the engine is running the belts tend to fly out in a more circular track so the pulley just stops the belt from flapping about as the engine speed increases.

Hey Willy,
I don't have any spares on mine, is this for the "power heater" belt?

Yes, there's an idler for the ww-belt for the power heater.  Haven't checked how the belt is routed on models w/o the PH.

Funny thing is, on my 2000, the idler is in contact with the belt, and works very well in keeping the belt in place.  On the 2004, the idler is not really touching the belt with the engine off.  While running, the idler spins, with a bit of noise.  And then, when stopping the engine, the idler continues at high speed for quite some time, making a noise like a worn out turbo.  Got very curious first time I heard it.
