Gearbox Problems

I doubt that the gearbox internals are to blame. You do not mention extra noises, so we can discount bearing failure. As the gears are in constant mesh, they, likewise, can be ruled out.

That leaves the rods and linkages between the g/lever and the internals. Firstly I suggest you remove the covers/trim from within the car to get at the g/lever itself. Remove the lever and check the pivot ball for wear,damage or dirt. Look down into the box and move the rods about using a long bladed screwdriver. You are looking for anything that could cause drag or stiffness.

Please advise.
