Hello to all. Recently bought a 1981 (W) Land Cruiser HJ60 4.0 diesel 4 speed manual with single round headlights. Based in Warks. Anyone had any dealings with these old girls? |

They will last a long time with maintenance. I would go through the service manual and baseline everything and keep it up to date. There is not much you cant do with some basic tools and mechanical knowledge _________________ 1995 HZJ75 troop carrier

My 40 series is fitted with the engine, box & axles from an HJ60 - properly maintained they are superb. Body rot was the main problem, so when you see it - attack it.
Streffie's garage in Worcester are experts on these motors and will have numerous spares for them. Worcester isn't too far from you so it may be worth touching base with them.
Also worth investing in the Haynes manual for it (the one specifically for the diesel).

Rodger

By all accounts the only problems are rust - especially around the rear arches and the front diff is not as strong as other Landcruisers - but then that's like comparing the Severn bridge with the Forth bridge - still built wildly over engineered and unlikely to have problems exept if running standard diffs with 37+ inch tyres. Good luck with it, sounds great. I think the 60 looks great.
I also think the 55 looks great too but that may be because I'm strange. _________________ 1999 Land Cruiser Amazon VX Active 4.2TD Auto

they are really very good. I haven't got any left in road guise now but they're capable of hard work and they're nice and basic.
heres a pic of mine in its heyday. The forklift weighs about 3 or 4 tons! No probs |

Why do you say the diff is not as strong? Its the same used in the 40 series and the 7* series heavy duty until 1990.
Its also the same diff as the rear.
After 1990 70 series got a smaller 8 " front diff but Ive never seen anyone have problems with them either under normal conditions _________________ 1995 HZJ75 troop carrier

Rosco.
Only going by hearsay I have to say, but what I have heard is compared to say an 80 it's only say 3/4 as bomb proof. I wasn't saying it was weak, just not as strong as others. Still stronger probably than pretty much anything no LC out there. The Rust however is a problem I have seen myself as well as on numerous sites. _________________ 1999 Land Cruiser Amazon VX Active 4.2TD Auto

Ive never heard anything like that at all. They are all basically the same 9.5 inch 4.11 diff and Im sure you can swap a 60/70 diff centre into an 80.
They are still using the same diff on the new V8 diesel 78/79 series _________________ 1995 HZJ75 troop carrier

Rosco.
I could be wrong but doesn't the 80 have a different (8") front Diff. I agree all the previous have a 9.5" diff but as far as I was aware the 80 series came with a High Pinion reverse cut gear 8" which was considerably stronger than the old 9.5" diff. But as said before that's a moot point because the 9.5" was still stronger than pretty much anything else out there and as you say was fitted from back in the 40 through the 55 to the 60 and also across the pickup range. _________________ 1999 Land Cruiser Amazon VX Active 4.2TD Auto

Many of the 80 series here are standard models with part time 4wd until 98. Mayby there is a differnce in the diffs with CDL models. _________________ 1995 HZJ75 troop carrier

I had one for about 3 years and it was a very strong old thing, used it on pipeline spreads in S Wales for 2 years, great. Body rot killed it in the end though |
