|
|
I'm bouncing this thread because I am in exactly the same position.
The stock 80 speakers really are pants!
Has anybody fit better gear to theirs using existing speaker apertures?
I could possibly look at cutting panels for bigger units, but ideally I would like to keep it looking standard from the outside.
Thanks in advance.

Hi, has anyone replaced upgraded the speakers in an 80 series Landcruiser? Mine are really hopeless and am looking for a replacement set, would prefer to use existing mountings...don't really want to cut and destroy interior of the vehicle...
Any hints as to improvements would be gratefully received please...
Regards,
Phil |

Hey Phil,
I so far haven't found any easy solution to this problem and I'm still wanting to upgrade.
I visited my local car radio dealer who came out and looked at the 80. His suggestion was to fit some raised bezels that the new speakers could sit in which in turn screw to the door cards or interior panels.
It made perfect sense, but like you I don't fancy cutting up the interior.
The big issue is the fact that my 1993 80 VX doesn't have front door speakers so its an option of some very small poorly located dash speakers or modding the front door cards!
Although some replacement speakers could be fit, because the size is so small its not really worth the effort and expense without doing the rears too.
I remember several years ago being advised to upgrade just the speaker wire between head unit and drivers in my old Discovery, and the sound quality difference was huge!
Standard speaker wire is cheap and thin and old tech. Modern oxygen free dual insulated stuff gave a remarkable improvement off the stock units.
That said, I haven't had time to go near mine in months for any improvements but it is on the cards.
The benefit will hopefully be the same, and as with the Discovery, I eventually upgraded the speakers too, connecting them to the new O/F cable and it was superb.
Meanwhile, its some pretty shady 40% volume for me with duff sounds.
(Not quite the same sound as my other halfs 10 speaker Bose plus huge sub vee dub)! _________________ ROCK N ROAD 4X4 LTD

Hey Brad, yeah they are a problem and I too have been advised by the 'local sound expert' to fit by the same bezel/cutting the door etc..."not happening"!
I have just ordered a couple of "not cheap " original VX HDJ80 replacement door speakers...mine is a 1997 model but will be the same spec as yours (doesn't have front door speakers only *beep* 4" underdash speakers)
I am planning to fit the two original types in the middle row doors.
A pair of component 'Rainbow' 4" speakers under the dash with two tweeters mounted on the door pillars.
Now also having been to Halfords today...I think I might perhaps think about fitting a 6.5" co-axial speaker in the rear compartment (may...add a little base)
If not I will probably go with a 'Bazooka' "sub" tube in the rear...they are not huge but if the need arises for a little extra space they can easily be disconnected and removed while the space is needed!
The above are plans but I was hoping that someone may have solved the problem before with another system that was proven...
Whichever way I decide to do it...it isn't going to be cheap and will still not be great...but will certainly sound better than it is now...whereby I have this little quiet sound somewhere in the vehicle that omits something like "music"...??
Where in the UK are you based?...I am in Cheshire.
I will let you know what sort of sound I end up with...?
Cheers, kindest regards,
Phil |

Hey Phil,
It is nuisance not having a simple fix.
I'm still contemplating having my local engineering shop manufacture some funky ally frames to space some decent sized units in the front doors. It won't be cheap but it will mean a decent quality sound.
I do like your suggestion of tweeters on the A pillars, they are really effective mounted there.
Like you, I also fancy a sub in the rear which is removable. I often. Carry work gear in the back so it would make more sense just to go for high end rear passenger door upgrades.
My work is actually load securing products for on & off road vehicles including bespoke webbing cargo nets & straps, so if you ever want any cargo rail, anchor plates etc to secure a sub down give me a shout. I could supply gear to fit discreetly in the back that can be fit/removed in seconds.
I've recently supplied North East Wales Mountain Rescue near Mold with some similar products for their Land Rovers.
Check out my website www.rocknroad4x4.com
The cargo rail and associated products are under the Cargo Control Hardware section, but check out the whole site. Webbing cargo nets have a couple of Land Cruiser specific products but I can make any size, any shape nets for any purpose including interior & exterior.
That's it, sales pitch over, have a look and if you like anything let me know and I'll do a special forum member discount.
Oducts
I am located in Preston I'd I caLancashire so just an hour or so up the M6.
I am an online shop only at the moment but I'm hoping to get retail premises hopefully in the first few months of this year.
That said I can demo several products by appointment.
I can always be reached on 07969 577 772 or 01772 378 120 if you needed to discuss anything.
Regards,
Brad. _________________ ROCK N ROAD 4X4 LTD

In my 94 import it has 6" speakers in the front doors near the front & about half way up the door card, if you take the card off there is the factory cut out in the frame already to accept the speakers, i put spacer rings on the surface of the door card in the rear doors about 3/4" thick and put some decent 4" speakers in, very good sound. |

Hi Brad,
Thanks for the link, I will have a look when I have a few moments sounds very interesting about the load bar...I did see something like what you describe sometime ago and thought it a good idea.
I have just yesterday ordered a pair of Rainbow 4" speakers with tweeters, they will be fitted as soon as they arrive!
Will give you some feed back as soon as I have some lol
The rear speaker hasn't been ordered as yet because I want to see if there is much difference with the first replacements...then I think a trip to Halfords for the single...maybe?! If not it'll be the Bazooka subtube!
Cheers, kindest regards,
Phil |

Hi Joinerman...have you any suggestions as to where 'door cards' like the ones you describe could be found...I have looked on the internet but not found any yet?
I have just sourced a pair of rainbow component 4" speakers with A pillar tweeters which I will fit as soon as I have a moment. I am also waiting for a new pair of replacement Toyota speakers for the middle row doors to arrive.
Having removed the side card from the boot I have found the rear most speaker has a unit behind it which powers the speaker, some sort of Amp I guess?! The fact that the boot speaker doesn't work I have not yet discovered and could be that the unit is knackered...some investigation this week will hopefully shed some light on the problem?! If I am unable to repair then I will fit a Bazooka sub or similar unit.
Regards,
Phil |

Phil, it would simply be a case of cutting your own hole in the card & you would need a grill to cover the speaker |

Hi Joinerman/Brad, thanks for suggestions I did look at the card and mine has a chrome band running across where I would have to cut
I am happy to say that the job of replacing and improving the sound system is now done and wow much better and cost wasn't too painful! although the two Landcruiser 'original' replacements were expensive!
I have ended up with a pair of 4" 'Rainbow' component speakers with A pillar mounted tweeters in the front.
Sourced a pair of new 'Original' (to save cutting and bodging the doors) Toyota Landcruiser door speakers for middle row doors.
The rear boot cargo area now has a Bazooka subwoofer to provide the low range sound. I decided on the Bazooka because it can be removed in the event of carrying lost of cargo...and to replace the
Toyota rear boot speaker and Toyota amp would have cost in excess of £400 and for a pretty *beep* result!
Very happy with the result
Regards,
Phil |
