Hello all, I'm stumped by an annoying noise on my cruiser at the moment...

Start off mine is a manual 5 door, 1KZTE motor etc....

The noise is directly behind the speedo console emanating from the engine area...  Sounds like the exhaust blowing/turbo pressure leaking and is only heard above 2000rpm

The volume of the fluttery noise is adjustable under load by squeezing the throttle, so I have assumed either exhaust leak or inlet manifold (after turbo) leak, but I'll be damned if I can find anything!!

I should also point out that I have completely removed the EGR system, so definitely not that leaking, I have also checked the plate I put on the Exhaust Manifold (8mm metal not burnt through)

I'm starting to think there is a crack in either exhaust manifold or turbo or I'm missing something stupid, has anyone else had this?

Dave

I wonder if it is actually the well-known "weak spring in the Injector Pump" issue raising its head again ?? It doesn't sound like it from your description but noises are notoriously difficult to trace from inside while driving.

Failing that, check the cam box breather pipe for splits.

Cam box gasket and bolts all OK ??

Have you done any work on the car recently ??

When did the noise start ??

Are there any oil leaks anywhere ??

There is a spring-loaded connection between the exhaust header pipe and the main section, its designed to blow if the tailpipe gets obstructed. Have a look at that (and make sure no-one has shoved a spud down the pipe (like wot I did in my yoof  Embarassed).

I.E. Check the simple things first before stripping your turbo out  Wink.

Bob.

I had something similar when I changed out my glowplugs yesterday. It was a loud high pitched fluttering noise that started when I approached 2000rpm.

Turns out I didn't fully tighten the inlet to my intercooler and the metal gasket was flapping away when in turbo started boosting  Embarassed

First thing I'd be doing is checking for loose hoses and splits in old rubber parts as you will have disturbed a lot of old components.

Cheers, I'm back on it later today I'll go back through everything....

Definitely no leaks, oil never moves, doubled checked.

Cant see any pipes off and have had a quick look for potatoes LoL

No intercooler on mine so less gaskets on the intake side, but going to check them all tonight, definitely sounds like boost related pressure leak somewhere

I did do the spring on the injector pump ages ago, this noise seems very different is definitely more on the drivers side (high up), I guess if it's only while on boost it sort of makes me think that this would definitely be on the intake side after the turbo, there must always be a fair pressure on the exhaust side before the turbo?

On that line of thinking has anyone ever bothered measuring their turbo boost pressure, I'm not about to go max power up the truck, but did wonder about temporarily fitting a boost gauge would possibly let me know if it was leaking somewhere...

OK so noise really peeing me off this AM,

Decided to pull air pipes and heat shield off the manifold etc.....

Only to find two of the three bolts that hold the turbo to the Exhaust manifold only finger tight! DoH

Cheap fix at least!!!

I can't really believe it drove so well leaking there, and no blackness around heat shields....
