hi everyone, I really need some advise.  bought a Colorado  3l automatic on Tuesday evening from a private seller on autotrader  all seemed well with it , then driving home from work on Wednesday evening on the m4  then what I would experience in a manual is the clutch slipped and the speed reduced to about 5mph and limped home.
can anyone please offer me advise as to what the problem could be , costs and any recommendations to garages near heathrow.

also could anyone offer advise where I would stand from a legal point of view on potentially getting my money back or having the previous owner pay for repairs. I don't think ill get too far with this as the previous owner is a solicitor.
thank you
liam

Sorry to say this buddy, but as you say it's a private seller so they don't have to do anything no warrenty no nowt,a trader is a very different thing hence why you pay more with them to cover any minor costs.have you checked the automatic transmission fluild level.hope someone comes alone with more help for you mate.

First thing springs to mind is autobox fluid.
Autobox a fairly common fault w/Collies at the 10 year/100k miles anniversaries.

Autobox fluid quantity - if level  was ok when you first got it, have you checked colour/smell of autobox fluid since it stopped?

If burnt toast smell/colour, suspect wrecked brake bands.

When toasted, they crumble away & contaminate the fluid with lots of particles which block the large filter in autobox sump.

Total or partial blockage stops circulation or slows like a slipping clutch. Particles then settle in base of sump, car regains motion...until filter too blocked again...and so on.

This is the result of pressurised engine coolant getting into the autobox via the 'box cooler element in base of rad. If caught quickly, new rad and several changes of fluid may save the box. Usually however, box is wrecked.

You may have been unlucky, it's only just happened so fluid and new rad will get you sorted. If it has a new rad and fluid, may be the seller 'fixed it' prior to moving it on. Unless you signed a 'sold as seen' document you probably could ask for your cash back - I'm sure someone will add to this post on the topic.

Been in the car trade a few years and if it's private sale you don't have a leg to stand on.

thank for the advise, I towed it to a local mechanic last night. I should know the cost by early next week Crying or Very sad
I phoned the previous owner and as suspected he rattled off as if quoting from a pre prepared script "im not mechanically trained, therefore when I stated it was in good working order it was my own opinion as a layperson. whilst I appreciate the situation you are in, this is not my business" nice guy ! hopefully karma will sort him out.

while the  Colorado is with the mechanic, are there any other common faults I should ask him to check/replace while its off the road.  Question

I had quite a few problems when I got mine,it had 12 mths mot when I got it,but had oil leak and rear prop yoke had play in it,handbrake didn't hold and a few other things,I contacted the mot station over this and said what was wrong and it turned out to be the previous owner what does the mot ,surprise surprise ,all I got was it was ok when it left here, sent a letter to his boss saying I was contacting vosa he took ages to get back to me so I'd already done the jobs as my wife and kids go in the motor,I told him I'd contacted vosa already and I heard it in his voice the worries of loosing been able to do mots, might learn them for next time.he said we would of sorted it,but like I said should of been done before passing an mot not after.bet every car goes in their now get it done right lol as they will be thinking its vosa sending one to check.

a quick update and further advise needed please !
I finally got a hold of the garage - who are supposedly rated 2nd in my area in the good garge scheme- I think they have rated themselves.
they have said its only the gearbox, despite my insistence on the possible coolant entering the gearbox problem, they have said no that's not the problem . they haven't even removed the gearbox !
so they gave me a quote of £1776 incl vat to rebuild the box.and stated it would take a week or so to carry out. when I queried the cost of £1100 + vat for the recon he said  I was welcome to supply a gearbox myself . any thoughts ?

Tough one, if you supply a box for them to fit & it has problems they won't want to know, if they rebuild yours ( they will sub the job out to a specialist who you probably won't know ) & it's still wrong they will have to remedy it

Hi Liam.

As you have entrusted the job to one garage, then they are legally binding to give you service for the money they are about to receive. I recommend that you examine the completed work for signs that the box has actually been removed from the car and looks as if it has been cleaned. If you don't feel happy to do this, ask a friend with some mechanical knowledge to do it for you.

Yes, OK, I'm being cynical but as this motor failed so quickly after purchase I am feeling a bit jittery about it.

Roger

thanks roger, the garage had given it to a gearbox company only across the road from them . it will come with a 12 month guarantee so hopefully it should be ok.

I was due to collect the cruiser today , spoke with the receptionist this morning to confirm it would be ready , oh she says by the way it needed a new radiator its ok we have sourced a new one that will be fitted as well today. I said no one told me it needed a new rad let alone discussed the extra cost with me, will I just give you a blank cheque and you fill it out ?
she said but you told us it might need a new rad, yes I replied and you told me on 3 occasions that you wont know until you took the gearbox off, that was last week.

so now looks like I will have some made in china cheap sh** rad fitted probably filled with dishwater.
Im guessing the bill now to be about 2k. I take a half day to and go and collect it and guess what its not ready,i wait an hour when the guy working there says sorry its not ready the lads are off home!! wft some brilliant customer service there. he has given me some *beep* Chrysler to make do with until tomorrow and I find out that I have to remortgage my house to pay for it

This is a classic move on the part of a garage. They are not entitled to fit another part without telling you what it is and what it will cost. When you remove a g/box you need to lower the back of the engine and it is possible to damage the rad. by poking the fan into the rad. fins.

You need knowledgable back up to help you sort out this mess. If you go back alone they will eat you alive. I have a friend who took his car for a service. They didn't clean the w/screen so he said they couldn't prove they had serviced it. He drove off without paying and never had a comeback.

Go in hard and demand to see the old rad. No old rad, no pay.

Roger

Apologies for the late reply, not go near a computer for a while, BUT some of the advice above is totally wrong....

Even if you buy a car privately, there is legislation to protect a buyer (totally different if you buy at Auction, where there is specific Auction based law).

Did you ask (and I would record) the seller about the fault on the way home? What did they say?

Hard to give advice on here not knowing the story, but it is NOT a case of "Sold as Seen" as some people think it is (even where that is written on a receipt).

there was no fault until the gearbox went  after driving less than 20 miles.
he described it as good working order and well maintained, I would have to go to court to argue that it was neither and given that the seller is a solicitor and his reluctance to even sympathise with me would indicate that he would make it a very costly affair for me.
