|

Hello all,
Just bought a new to me 1992 lj78 - great rig and will be my daily driver/family hauler. I have been reading up on how to keep it running great and want to get an EGT and temp gauge installed but wanted to ask if those who have already done this can recommend a brand? Prices range a lot, so don't want a cheap unreliable set, but not looking to over pay either.
Has had the head done. Previous owner said no cooling issues, but he drove it more on Sunday's only. Has new glow plugs and currently runs perfect. Still checking mileage, need more seat time.
Great forum. Has helped a lot. Looking forward to driving across Canada in this truck! |

I would also be interested in photos of your install jobs. Good place to locate so looks stockish. Is the factory temp gauge not enough? And what is "to hot" spot on that gauge? Right now, cooler weather, it stays below half. Thanks

The vehicle already has a perfectly good temperature guage - just get the cooling sysytem rebuilt/rad recored etc and you shouldn't have any trouble. _________________ peterB |

I've been reading so much doom and gloom on the lj78. Other than into the red, what is considered to hot on the factory gauge? Highest it has gone so far is half, but I know my vw scirocco runs normally at 3/4 - but haven't done any super hot weather with AC and heavy loads yet though. Thanks . |

About half seems to be normal in my experience of the instrument in 2 78s. _________________ peterB |

Fitting an EGT gauge would require the welding of an adaptor onto the primary ex, pipe to fit the EGT sensor to. You would need to remove the pipe to do this. Tales of doom and gloom are exaggerated and if you have the system overhauled or suitably checked, and the engine has not been overheated in the past, you should not have any problems. In the UK we can obtain supplementary temp. gauges but they rely on obtaing engine temp. from head bolts etc. and I don,t like that idea on principle, I have a KZJ 70 and the standard temp. gauge works just fine.

Thanks all. I finally went with a 3 in 1 gauge. Lots of work getting all the sensors installed, but now I have real time feedback. Now I can slowly tune in order to get better fuel mileage and lower reliable operating temps. |
