Hi,

Toyota are quoting £622 per side for replacement rear axle back plates. Is there a cheaper alternative out there?

Do later models have the same back plates etc?

Simon.

What exactly do you mean by axle back plates. Do you mean the backing plates bolted to the axle ends for the brakedrums/discs? You don't say what year & spec your LC is but they are available via Amayama for around £40 + vat/ID + P&P per side.

Thanks for the reply Phil. I mean the ones bolted to the ends of the axle. It has rear disks.

Not sure on full spec as it is my late father in laws.

It does sound like the brake backing plates. Are you certain the dealer quoted you for the correct parts 'cos £622 per side is a LOT!! or does that include fitting? The part  No.s are 47043-60090 RHS and 47044-60090 LHS. As far as I can tell, the part No's seem to be the same for all models up to 1995 when the 24v facelift models came out.

Are these plates the dust/dirt shields?

If so, on most models, they are just as easily left off.

Thanks Phil, I will look these up tonight. I do not think the price included fitting.

Roger, these plates hold handbrake cables and some other stuff I think.

Simon.

Are yes, the 80 uses small drum brakes built into the disc, so yes, there will be a requirement for hand brake cable mounting. That said, I have just looked at the similar backing plate on the 70 series and they are 110 euros. Obviously a major difference and an indication of a dealer mistake.

Before you check with the dealer, just why do you need to change them? Bearing in mind the high cost of parts, I am always looking at ways to repair the original.

The idea is to get the LC back plates inspected as repair is an option. It failed its MOT last year just on these corroded back plates.

It is a 90 Amazon 4.2TD.

I hope that if they are too far gone I can find some at a reasonable price. Cannot understand Toyota wanting so much for a press steel plate, seems a bit cheeky to me!

Thanks for the replies.

If you can't find any reasonably priced new plates locally just order them through an importer like Amayama but they'll probably take around 3-4 weeks to arrive and clear customs.

Hi Phil,

Checked out these part numbers on Amayama and there is no description and it does not seem to recognise the LHS part number. Tried Toyodiy and they are on there at about 110 euros each but the description describes a drum brake backing plate.

A few pictures would be good but neither site seems to have them!

Simon.

The description would be correct as the backing plate has all the essentials for a drum brake mechanism. This is the h/brake housed inside the top hat of the disc.

By the way, where is Scunny?

Roger, the shops are half empty these days like a lot of other towns. By sand I guess you mean Cleethorpes or Cleggy as we call it. Traditional English seaside town only 25 miles away.  Very Happy

Phil, don't worry thanks again.
