Last week the wheel studs on my HDJ81 1992 (250'000miles) appear to have failed with absolutely no warning whilst driving along (not hit anything). My gut instinct is that the bolts could have been stretched by over tightening at some point, although I've always tourque wrenched! Or could it be fatigue?
I have replaced all 24 studs. I've also dropped axle oil just for peace of mind, no metal on magnetic plug and all drive through diff etc seems fine.

I was hoping to add a photo...beyond me!?

Basically all 6 studs sheared at the same time (no evidence of historical fractures(rust) and no lose nuts!)

Any ideas would be great.

I think the torque settings are for dry studs ie. no grease or oil on them. So I‘m led to believe.

Happened on my HJ61, the drive shaft bolts on the rear sheared, twice!
Couldn't find a reason. One friend speculated the rear axle wasn't on straight.

Then two weeks later, five studs sheared in the middle of the night.
Still don't know why it happened. But I don't have the car anymore.

I had one fracture on left rear wheel, replaced all six no problems since.

A bit odd to say the least?

regards

Dave
