For a while now, the transfer box has been reluctant to go back to H2 from H4. From H2, I push the switch and it goes into H4 straight away, the green light above the swich glowing to confirm. Then I push the switch to release, and it could take several miles before the drive came out of H4 and the green light went out, confirming back in H2. Now it doesn't want to come out of H4 at all.

Any ideas on cause of problem and remedy appreciated.

Have you tried it in reverse for a couple of yards, I know that the surf has the same problem, and putting it in reverse clears the problem.

I have tried reversing. I have also tried taking it in and out of low ratio as the low ratio shift bypasses what looks like a vacum mechanism that engages/disengages H4.

I have now identified the offending part. The solenoid that switches the vacum to engage/disengage 4WD is faulty. Only the engage part works. I got it out of 4WD by temporarily reversing the vacum lines (so that only the disengage side worked).

Now I need to find someone who can either repair the solenoid or supply a sensibly priced spare (or equivalent). The price Toyota wanted for a gebnuine part is a joke (squared).

John.

You may be able to get a good price from the US, try CruiserDan on IH8MUD.com. Often parts like this are cheaper and easier to find in the US.
