Took delivery of new tilt (not the telescopic) motor for the steering wheel, which have a regular habit of failing...of which I have now found out why.
1. Undo the 2 screws behind steering wheel holding plasic shroud (engine on , turn wheel to do so) Remove single screw under side of cowling.
2. Separate cowling/shroud , 2 halves, pulling lower bit over the tilt lever.
3.The motor (tilt) is underneath column, held both sides by an m8 allen bolts, allowing it to pivot, take them out of the stubby "T" casting**
4.Prop up the steering wheel , bit of wood etc so its pushed towards front screen.
5. Disconnect wiring plug, has a little plastic pushey thing to separate the 2 halves.
6. Pull the two circlips (one large , one small) at each end of the motor threaded shaft.
7. Tilt the motor down and manually unscrew it. And there it is.
If you can wire a plug YOU CAN DO THIS. I went to a so called specialist who told me the whole steering column had to come out.........I DONT THINK SO!
The reason why these motors fail.
The stubby "T" casting the worm drive threads in and out of has a flattened star bolt on the underside. Its easy to see as it swivels. Take this bolt out, a small pipe wrench is best as its tight. So once bolt is out , there is a small spring , with a bit of plastic tube in it. Not entirely sure what the tube does, but the spring is too strong for the worm drive to pass through it creating unnessesary over pressure. I remedied this by putting a fibre washer under the flattened star bolt thus relieving the excess pressure. I only found this all out by installing the new motor and saw it was struggling as well.
When you reinstall the new motor, make sure the pressure spring spiggot ( in the stubby T) is swiveld to accept the worm as it can twist, not allowing the worm to be screwed in, but it is easy to rotate with a little hook/bent but of wire.
So all in all , very easy. Mike. |

Mike, excellent information. Both of my motors are still working albeit very noisily, do you happen to have any part numbers / prices? I'm almost certain that I will be replacing mine soon.
