I had new BFG ATs on my disco suffered them 2 months and sold them

Just bought a spare set of allys for LC and guess what tyres were on them
Yep same

So fitted them and found no detrement to road holding or manners but they are a much harder ride and you can feel every imperfection in the road. Much more stable for towing. I would suspect the MPG will go out of the window.

Considering fitting fuel improvers on my summer wheels

I had BFG at's on my 80 before he current MT's. I thought they were very good indeed. After 40K miles they still had plenty of tread left, hadn't worn funny, were excellent in snow and ice (they have the highest snow rating), but ultimately weren't good enough off road.

The sidewalls are stiffer though, but as you quite rightly say they're more stable when towing 'cos they don't roll on the sidewalls as much.

But it's like anything, if you want a tough tyre there are some downsides.

I had the bfg at on my discovery van and it wandered all over the place. I can see why people think they steer like a boat if you get one with those tyres.
