Hi all, just thought I'd introduce myself as I picked up a lovely Landcruiser 80-Series at the weekend. It's a 4.2TD 12 valve model, manual gearbox in VX trim (cloth seats, no air con but with sunroof, sliding rear 3/4 windows and locking front/centre/rear diffs - unusual spec?!). It's a 1-owner + demonstrator car, so in pretty good conditon all told, looking forward to getting out in it!

I will get some pics up over the weekend when I get a chance, but essentially I have bought this for a trip to Morocco next year, followed by a much bigger trip the year after.

I actually did a Morocco 'expedition' with Trailmasters two years ago in a G4 Challenge Range Rover Sport I had at the time (pics available if anyone is interested!); was an amazing experience, and in fairness the car performed admirably, however the trip highlighted to me the fragility of modern cars and their reliance on unnecessary electronics - thus for my next adventure, something older, simpler and more reliable was required.

For an LR fan, the Defender would be the obvious choice, but I find the driving position so uncomfortable in every way, it's just a non-starter. So, here I am, the keys to an 80-Series Landcruiser in my hand, and eager to subtley modify it to my needs.

Unlike a lot of Overland vehicles, subtlety will be the key for this build - bar the possibile addition of a snorkel and the BFG A/T tyres already fitted, I want the exterior to look as standard as possible. The addition of my Maggiolina rooftent will be fairly obvious, but this is removable and one option I am considering is a sleeping platform in the vehicle instead.

Other than that, my shopping list includes a fridge/freezer, water tank/filtration system, 240V mains power inverter, CB radio communication, subtley improved audio system and a full storage system with sliding drawers, etc. Other than that, my feeling is the car is already perfectly prepared for expedition use - long days on a mixture of roads and tracks, rather than serious mud-plugging and offroading.

If anyone has any links or photo's to share of their 80-Series build I'd love to see them! Will get some pics of my vehicle uploaded over the weekend.

Nice one! You've taken a big upgrade from from a Land Rover. Very Happy and yes, thats a very unusual spec 80 series you've got.

Is it that unusual then? I figured all VX's had leather and air con to be honest, although I'm going to hot climates where I don't want either!!
