Have you never thought to count them as you drive ?
start by putting it in D and set off and count how many times it changes till you get to about 50mph
and finally what difference does the amount make, 1/10 gears does not matter its the final
drive that is important ! _________________ 2004 Amazon 100 series

That is an excellent idea.................
It would be easier if someone had the answer.
I simply want to know when they changed from 4 to 5 speed and then 6 speed for the late cars?
I have confirmed that mine is 5 speed now. |

Thanks Glenn. Is their a timeline of updates or facelifts anywhere on this forum. Did the very early cars have a 4 speed? |

Changed to 5 speed auto in 2004. The earlier ones are the same 4 speed auto that was in the 90, complete with fluid dipstick. |

It will be the 5 speed, confirmation being no transmission dipstick under the bonnet. |

If you're on the road and not towing it'll look after itself. If you're towing on anything other than a flat road you might want to put it in 4 to stop the box changing up and down too much and getting hot. If you want to use engine breaking you can set a lower gear. Off-road on steep descents I stick it in L, and also the low ratio box so I can crawl down. |

I have the 5 speed, generally in D is does everything you ask of it.
On some long descents i slip it across to 4, this provides a small amount of engine braking, don't think on the road i've ever bothered using 3 for engine braking, i also sometimes leave it in 4 around town, but unless you tow heavy weights there is no real reason to do anything other than leave it in D.
It's a lovely box, silky smooth changes, but if you use Cruise Control you will find it's quite eager like most torque converter autos to drop a gear when it sees a hill in order to maintain cruise speed, when by gentle throttle increase it can maintain speed on some surprising hills and stay in lock up top.
The auto Hilux with the 4 speed box i had before was exactly the same regarding Cruise, would change down too soon to maintain speed.
The only minor gripe i have with the box is how it behaves in Cruise, but it's quite normal for every auto i've driven except for those with full manual function, which these Toyota boxes do not have. |
