I've recently bought a 2006  Land Cruiser with the 1KD FDV engine. It's done 100k miles and generally runs well, but it has issues when it's cold. It starts up fine and idles well, but as soon as I drive off in it, there is this horrible loud rattle / knocking sound from the engine. This only lasts very briefly and as soon as the temperature gauge moves, the noise disappears and it runs perfectly.

I'm not a mechanic but I know more than the basics and I've been everywhere obvious. It's freshly serviced with the correct oil. I took it to a so called diesel specialist who tested the injectors and condemned them, saying the figures were all wrong during a test. . I reluctantly bought a set of brand new genuine Denso injectors and a set of heater plugs, put it all back together, started it up, only to find exactly the same problem still there.

I've had all the software updates done, I'm about a thousand pounds lighter and I'm losing sleep.

I see that this is quite a common fault on the forums, but no one has a definitive answer or solution.

Can anyone offer some constructive advice based on experience?

Many thanks.

Loads of very long threads on here and other sites regarding this, I think Toyota did a service type of recall to rectify the problem, read http://www.tlocuk.co.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?t=11831

Also you say you fitted injectors, so did you get them set electronically to the vehicle ?

Did you check the oil pickup pipe on the sump when you did the injectors for partial blockage ? Could be restricting the oil till its warmed up and thinner.

I would recommend you buy an adaptor lead to go from the OBD port to a laptop and download the free techstream software. You can then see the injector feedback values for yourself at hot and cold and if they are within spec. Like you I changed the injectors but still have some noise when cold. I think if you are running an old LC this is not the best engine to have and I don't think I would buy another one depite it being a nice vehicle overall. I just get the feeling it might let go at any time now (120K). Never had any engine problems with all my previous LC's going back to 1982 and still have a 2H engine going strong in a boat some twenty years after the car rusted away.

I have an LC5 with the same rattle you describe . I have checked the injector values and two injectors are out of tolerance.
If you check some of the Australian forums you will see that this is a common problem, nobody seems to know the true cause of what is happening.
I tend to drive slowly for the first couple of miles until the engine is warm then it is ok. As long as it is not blowing any colour of smoke you should be fine.
Hope this helps and yes it sounds like a sowing machine..

When I replaced my injectors with denso recon ones some 3000 miles ago the injector feedback values were all less than +/-1.0. Now I have checked them again and they are 2.6, 0.3 -1.8,-1.3 and the rattle has returned. Not much better than the ones I replaced. I am not keen to remove them and send them back because of the cost of new injector pipes etc.
How would I know if the ECU has adjusted the injection period for smooth tickover or it is a problem with the injector(S)?

My 04 120 rattles a bit for the first mile when cold. It is distinctly a diesel rattle. I am an ag engineer and it wouldn't seem to me a dramaticly dangerous thing that will wreck the engine and has nothing to do with the injector seals fault discussed in other threads.
Could it not be simply be the ECU over fueling or changing the timing whilst cold starting/ running?

You could be onto something there Liongeorge.

When i first got my 120 lo and behold i found an expensive and obviously recently fitted tuning box connected in to the back of the pump.
It caused unreasonable black smoke, but what was most noticeable was the pronounced Diesel rattle when cold, requiring very gentle throttle in order not to sound too harsh.
Removing the tuning box cured that instantly and the smoke stopped, can't say i noticed any less power on tap.

Incidentally the motor had failed it's previous the MOT first time due to excess smoke, quite why someone had wasted some £300+ on this useless box of tricks i do not know, without it the motor takes off more rapidly than a vehicle of its design really should in bog standard tune and without a trace of any colour smoke at any temp or throttle opening.

As discussed in another thread, my recent change back to Diesel specific 10w40 engine oil from EXOl has quietend things down even more.

we have an LC3 03my, it has always been noisy when cold, it now has 160k on the clock, I was told the noise was due to the ecu altering the timing in order to warm up the cat, infact as mine warms up and the temp gauge needle reaches a particular point you can hear the engine suddenly get noticeably quieter.
