Morning Gents
I wonder if anyone can help with a small issue with J90 VX please?
The steering is on the whole pretty good for a 120k miles 20 year old truck, short of one issue.
There is an increasing amount of play and movement at the steering wheel end. If i grip the wheel i can move it side to side a little laterally, and the same up and down.
With my old Land rover it was a top steering bush which regularly failed, and i wonder if the same thing is on the LC?
My ropey old back is preventing a visual inspection at the moment, but it would be really helpful to know the part needed especially if i have to farm out the job.
many thanks in advance.
Cheers
mark

you could look at the steering rack bushes. This is a common source of vague steering. It has been noted as an advisory on my last two MOTS but so far not back enough the warrant failure.

Hello Mark - can you clarify if the steering wheel itself has play up/down and left/right, or do you mean it has play as you turn the steering wheel? If it’s rotational play, then it could be the steering rack bushes, which is common as mks said. Maybe inner tie rod(s) or universal jointsI recently replaced my steering rack bushes with the Nolathane kit from Roughtrax and it certainly improved my steering. (Roughtrax are open again now).

If it’s up/down or sideways movement of the steering wheel itself, then I think you need to check if just the wheel is moving or the whole column in moving. Could be loose nuts that hold the column to the body, the intermediate shaft clamp, some looseness in the steering wheel position adjustment, loose steering wheel nut maybe.

You said ‘there is an increasing amount of play...’. If that’s developing quickly then something may well be loose rather than wearing out.

Good luck and stay safe
