I have a 1999 Amazon 100 4.2 TD with 110,000 miles. For the past few months there has been a slight leak coming from behind the glove box. The leak is very slight and only appears occassionally. Sometimes overnight the leak causes a fluid to gather on the rubber floor mat. When the liquid finally disappears from the floormat it causes the mat to distort and crack (indicating that the liquid is aggressive). If I rub my hand along the panel under the glovebox the liquid gathers on my hand and can be best described as a diesel smell and texture. The air con and heater units work fine and every attempt to locate the source of the leak have been unsuccessful. Does anybody have any experience or suggestions where I should look next or what I am dealing with.

By the way this is a great site.

Bushbury Wolf
Sure, I'll post the progress and the result. I have sent an e-mail to PF Jones requesting part numbers and price. I have other potential sources that I will check also.

Last night I stripped the covers off the pump. When exposed, the 6 outlets are located at the back. Along the top you will find 2 sensors or valves (I suspect that one is the cut off valve the other is the spill valve). There is another sensor or valve positioned at the side. These all seemed perfect. In fact the pump is so well enclosed and everything was so squeaky clean that I might as well have been opening the box to a new pump. Next I spotted the problem component. It was positioned under the six outlets at the bottom of the pump and, in contrast to everything else, it was stained and dirty. I popped the electrical connector off and the diesel flowed briefly then stopped. The seal between the valve and the pump is fine and IMHO the source of the leak is inside the valve. The leak travels through the wire core and eventually terminates on the floor of the VX. I mentioned earlier that the leak was not affecting the vehicle performance... I now withdraw that statement because the leak has been present for a long time, perhaps predating my purchase of the VX last year. I noted the pump details (part numbers ets) from the name plate. This morning I spent 5 minutes on the phone to a diesel specialist workshop here in Ireland. The pump is a Denso unit (apparently this is identified in the 3rd line on the nameplate) The component in question is the TCV or timing control valve. Apparently it's prone to leakage and one was available off the shelf for Euro 225 (approx STG£125). Its ordered and will arrive tomorrow. I hope to fit it at the end of the week. Allowing one week for testing I will post the result hopefully at the end of next week.

SOUNDS LIKE SAME PROBELEM AS I HAD.
SOME INFO AND NUMBERS THAT MIGHT BE USEFULL.
HOPE ALL GOES OK

Hi, got a 4.2 x reg. Had same problem on several ocations.engin managment light reset by local dealer no definate fault, was notified about faulty pump sencer leaking fuel up inside wireing loom. Traces of fuel could be found at different connectors on engin and up behind glove box.
toy dealer recomended refubishe pump. £2800 for a pattern £3500 for toyota. this might cure it. ha bluddy ha. Iwas thinking about slitting the wire with a stanly knife. Anyway if you look at your fuel pump, right at the bottem at the back there is a sencer. just below the 6 outputs. this is a timing sencer, remove the connector and check for diesel. aparently its common. This sencer can be bought from kent diesel centre (01622 687882 for the grand total of £139.20 inc vat & del. took me 2 hour to fit. 1 of whitch was spent getting m8 alan bolt out at back of pump. very fiddly.
1.     remove covers
2.     brackets
3.     5 bolts around back of pump tricky (remove oil filleter)
4      remove 2 small bolt holding sencer
5      refit new.job done
6      get lower back sorted after bending over car for 2 hours.

All work goes like a different truck , far more responcive. And as of yet no problems, try my best but will not cut out no mater how much i thrash it.
Hope this helps
get yourself a small alan key set 1/4 drive you will need it.
sorry about spelling not strong point

HOG
It sounds like you had an identical problem. Interested to hear that the performance improved when you fitted the new switch.... I'm giddy now with the prospect of fixing the stupid leak AND improving the performance.
By the way the details of the Timing Valve Assembly are as follows:

Denso Timing Valve Assembly
Part no. 096360-0580
Price €235 plus VAT
Available off the shelf from Diesel Fuel Injection Ltd in Dublin.

Hi. hope all goes ok when fitting your new sencer. Please dont get to excited about proformance. Mine felt a bit hesitant when pulling away.(short of breath), but fitting the sencer did seem to resolve most of the breathlesness.

All the best

I changed the TCV this morning. All in all it took 1 hour to complete. Remove pump covers and cover brackets, remove outlet pipe bracket, remove plate at back of pump (tricky), remove and replace the TCV. Reassemble and proceed to the test drive. All in all I covered 70 miles today. I witnessed an immediate and marked improvement to the performance. The VX is much more perky and punchy. The gearshift is brisk and executed at exactly the correct moment. The kickdown engages sooner delivering power when needed (not moments after it is needed - as was the case). The communication line between the pump and the engine management unit is fixed and both are in constant clear dialogue -the results are fantastic.

To crown a good mornings work, in the afternoon I changed both front lower ball joints.....again the results were excellent with more positive and confident handling. Steering play and vibration has been eliminated. Point the truck in any direction you wish and it holds the line with confidence.

The last remaining problem is a vibration when braking. It is most evident when braking on a smooth road. I suspect a warped brake disk. I'll tackle this one later in the week.

Thanks for your responses.

Hi Hog,
First I contacted Toyota and they would only sell me the ball joint on the bar. They wanted €300 per side (STG£200). All that needed to be replaced was the ball joints so I bought them from Milner Off Road for STG£75 each + VAT. It took two of us 1.5 hours to fit both sides. Cost to me was STG150 (VAT free for export when registered for VAT) plus a couple of pints for my helper - worth every penny of it.
