I made a picture of the base of the bulb to help its identification.

I had a second look at the old bulb and - as Radiomans says - the leads on the lamp part are wrapped round the plastic base to make the contacts onto the circuit board.
I unwrapped the wires using a small penknife to gently prise them up, the broken lamp dropped out and the replacement lamp went straight back in.
The new lamp comes from Maplin and is a 12v sub-min yellow. It cost 59p.
I took some more photos which I hope show the repair process clearly. The only special tool was my penknife!

ps I wrapped the new lamp wires round twice as they are thinner than the old wires.

This is just to say thanks to all who contributed here. I finally bought the genuine Toyota bulbs which were £4 each (bl**dy rip-off) because I had complained that the first pair were not what I wanted although a couple are used on the same circuit board. Since these were larger than the ones I was after and were 'only' £2-ish each I thought the smaller ones would be less money.
However, Radiomans fix is the way to go in future.
The Maplins yellow lamps give a slightly brighter result than the original ones but perfectly acceptable. I could put the little green rubber filter on the lamp to lower its output.
