Hi

My wife just acquired a Garmin Nuvi 200W as a mothers day present

Now I am toying around with getting hold of some ordnance survey software which will work on "her" new toy.
It has a mini SD slot for additional software.

Does anyone know if I can use Memory Map, Fugawi or other software on this?

I don't know Memory Map so sorry if I am missing the point, however...

I am using a package called OziExplorer. You can get a copy from:

There a trial/demo version to download and then you can get an unlocking code to access the full product. I leave you to investigate.

The purpose of OziExplorer is to make your own maps from an aerial image of the area being visited. You fix a couple of points using the local Lat/Long grid (OrdSurv in our case) and then plot your waypoints, routes and tracks as you require. This means it's completely versatile. It takes the data from the GPS using a serial or USB cable - whatever is available for your GPS.

I originally got it when I was using a Garmin Etrex which is pretty basic. You can load the software on a laptop and do moving image stuff as well if you want though with a Nuvi there's not much benefit.

I now have a Garmin Streetpilot which comes with the Garmin MapSource package which is great for road journeys but no use for trips off road. You can use it but the map lacks any topological or similar data. Garmin do sell topological maps for some areas so that might be more interesting or you could get the relevant Ordnance Survey map and use that with OziExplorer.

Recently I have been using the aerial images from Google Earth to form the basis of my maps for off road trips and that works quite well as long as you remember to set the GPS and OziExplorer to the OrdSurv grid. If you stay with one on the WGS 84 grid (which is the basic grid for all GPS devices) the two systems can get out of step. If you stick to the OrdSurv grid (in the UK) you can pick up locations on their maps and transfer data reasonably reliably from one to the other. I suspect that the grid used by Google Earth is WGS 84 so take care using its LAt/Long data if you want to stay with the OrdSurv grid.

If you just want to file waypoints, tracks and routes in a tabular form you could try G7toWin which can take data from a GPS but is only able to present it on your PC as a list. This can be useful as a means of archiving data for later reference or to transfer to others. It is free software from:-

I use it to store waypoints and tracks from some trips when I don't have a map handy. I can then upload it onto the GPS when I plan a return visit to the location concerned or get a map image and want to import the data from the G7toWin data file using OziExplorer or MapSource. It can convert data from one format to another quite reliably; GDB, GPX, PLT, etc. It can also output a CSV format file which can then be used with Word or Excel so it's quite useful for that alone.
