|

The engine stop light has recently started to come on intermitently. When this happens the engine runs roughly and it loses power drastically. Fortunately up to now the fault usually clears. The agents here in Kenya (who are fairly useless) tell me that the computer diagnoses a faulty fuel pump sensor. Other "experts" suggest that this is the rpm sensor on the fuel pump. The agents say this is not sold as a separate part and I have to replace the whole fuel pump.....ughhhh! Anybody have any experience of this fault....I think the sensor is the one to the rear bottom of the pump as you look at it from the LHS of the car. The odd thing is that the fault is very intermitent, but usually only becomes apparent when the engine is hot and running fast. If the problem is indeed this sensor is it possible to source it independently of the whole pump? The pump is a Denso make. |

hi it sounds like the spill valve on jap imports a lot did not get recalled to have this rectified the problem is the
electrics on top of the valve burn out how can you tell
take the cover off the fuel pump look on top and you will see a big nut with a wire going in to the top
if it is faulty all the plasic push in plug where the wire goes in will be melted
you can get a replacement valve from nippon denso but you will have to quote the fuel pump
numbers located on a plate on the side of the pump
i did this via a deisel part specialist in the uk called i think merlin deisels who found the part in holland toyota will tell you that a new pump is needed
and i wonder if back in 1998 / 99 when the uk models where recalled if they actually changed the pumps at £ 3000 or the spil valve for £200
just out of intrest how many km is you vehicle on my one had this problem at 110,000 kms |

Freddie, many thanks for this. As you suugested I have looked at the top valves (there are actually 2) and the connectors look to be in perfect shape. Also when the engine is running and you pull the connector off on both terminals the engine immediately dies which would indicate they are working fine. I still have the feeling that the problem is this other component at the bottom end (near the injector pipes)....when you disconnect that lead the engine behaves identically to the symtoms described....ie running roughly, almost total loss of power...but it still keeps running....and as soon as you reconnect its fine. Do you know what this sensor (or whatever it is) actually does....it seems as if the cable is a power cable (i.e there is 14v across is constant when engine running) rather than a cable for sending a current to a sensor. The difficulty is that this is an internittent fault...the car will go for miles quite happily, then suddenly (always on decelaration to a low speed and then reacceleration) the light comes on and we are in trouble...but eventually at least so far thank goodness it has cleared itself. I will contact merlin direct..maybe nippon as well. Any other ideas? The car has done 160,000 km |
