Hi everyone,
Have owned the cruiser for just over a month now so thought I'd share some MPG figures.Just completed a 1200 mile round trip fishing holiday in Scotland and I've been getting around 27-28 MPG general "running around" which dropped down to around 22-23 MPG on the motorway towing the boat which I guess weighs in at roundabout 1 ton when filled with all the camping gear etc..Thats keeping at a steady 60-65 MPH.Just wondering how that compares to all the other 80 TD's out there?

While I was on the campsite I experimented with the diff locks.Locking the centre diff didn't seem to make much difference to manouverability (on wet grass) but locking the rear diff seemed to make turns longer and locking the front diff in addition gave a turning circle in the supertanker class!! Is this normal or have I got a problem somewhere?

Ran into one small 'problem' when launching the boat on the concrete slipway.Could do with the ability to turn off the centre diff lock in low range so I'll attempting this mod shortly.

I've just acquiared a 96 4.2 TD, but haven't yet finished the first tank; only travelled 135 miles since the last refill. The needle is sitting on the 3/4 marker. This is mainly driving around London.

How are noise levels on the motorway ? Mine is equipped with mud terrain tyres which are rather noisy, and I think I can hear the diff in amongst it, but not really sure.

What type of tyres are you running ? I'm considering Bridgestone or Michelin road tyres; lighter, quieter and more economical than the M/Ts.

I was quite pleased with the (low) noise levels on the motorway.Certainly a lot quieter than the Disco I had previously. With all the windows and sunroof closed the main source of noise seemed to be tyre'roar'.Mechanical noise was pleasantly low.I'm running General XP2000's on the back (road biased tread pattern) and Runway Enduro A/T's on the front.I've not heard of these before. They were fitted by the seller just prior to selling the car. They're probably budget tyres so I'll just have to see how they last.

The mod for this involves removing a wiring plug from the transfer case.

Hi Andy,

Thanks for the link for the difflock mod.Was going to attempt it by following a wiring diagram but that'll simplify things no end! Will the mod mean that I'll also be able to lock the diff in high range which I can't do at present? (It has ABS fitted).

Regards
Phil

You need to get a Centre diff lock switch, then you can lock it in high range. The mod just enables you to disable the automatic centre diff lock in low so you can run in low ratio with the centre diff open. The diff lock switch is then the only means of locking the centre diff. You can get them from Slee if you can't find one on e bay. Got mine on e bay pretty cheap from the US.

That seems exceptionally good compared to mine - is it a manual?
I get 20-22 mpg round town and 25 mpg on a journey with an auto.

It is a manual.I got those figures driving conservatively.getting your foot down on the motorway, especially when towing would no doubt increase fuel consumption by quite a bit!

I need mine re-gassed and live in Wycombe. It has R12 liquid apparently which is less common but I guess yours was the same. How much for me as a non-mate?

Cheers.
