Hi All.  New to the forum.

I have a problem with my 2000 x GX auto. Car is 1 owner 110k with 23 services.  It seems to be making a whining noise on the road.  Initially I got the wheel bearings changed, no change,  then got the front diff reconditioned, still no charge. Finally got the transfer box reconditioned at David beaumont in Halifax.  This still hasn't fixed it. The whining comes at around 20 mph and does seem to get louder the faster you go. This car has had the radiator replaced/ auto box rebuilt but the noise is not pitching with the gear changes.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Wow sounds like a lot of work so far - at least you know wheel bearings/diff etc are all good...!

When did it start? had any work just been done?

Is it definitely a gear whine?  does it change with revs or speed?  Very difficult to diagnose this sort of thing over the internet - I think I would be saying start simple and try running vehicle with bits disconnected before doing any more work....

For example - run down the road and back with the air box off check its not the an air whine - strange how these can resonant on the move

then maybe run the vehicle with front prop shaft removed (engage center diff lock) you'll only have RWD but would be interesting to see if whine goes..

then run with rear prop removed (front replaced obviously)

Hi, and welcome  Wink.

What tyres are you running ?? Some can whine on the road, particularly if they are a bit 'knobbly'!

There is an idler bearing that is used to tension the water pump belt - it doesn't take long to remove it and check it for wear. If its been over-tightened it could be the culprit.

This isn't the famous "fuel pump tensioning spring" noise is it ?? I believe that is more of a tapping noise but it might be worth investigating (this assumes you have the 1KZ-TE diesel engine).

Its very difficult to come up with something meaningful over the 'net', so keep us informed and we'll keep suggesting things  Very Happy.

Bob.

Thanks For the suggestions.

The noise is at constant speed. It was running all terrains which we thought could have been the culprit but it's just gone on Bridgestone duelers and the noise is at the same level. The noise isn't pitching with the Auto box gear changes at all, just constant noise.

Going to forward your recommendations to the garage on Monday regarding taking props off etc and giving it a run like that.  It's very strange and even has the mechanic in a riddle

A mechanic should not have difficulty in isolating a noise source.

Firstly, Is it only apparent when you are moving or is it engine running and moving or stationary?

If it is moving only then you can ignore the engine compartment. Jack the car up so that all 4 wheels are off the ground. Start engine and select a gear so that all 4 wheels are turning. Now start listening, if possible with a mechanics stethoscope. If he hasn't got one, he isn't a mechanic. This is all about isolating the basic area and then going in deeper. Eventually you will find it.

How loud is it?

I agree with Roger a Mechanic should be able to track it down, that being said, if it's not loud and its something that you are more tuned into it can be hard to find, sometimes you need the engine/drivetrain to be under load and pulling hard to put all the normal twists on engine mounts etc to make things vibrate...  (rolling road would be ideal!)

They should be able to tell you if it's Bearing/Vibration/Fluid/Exhaust/Turbo Whistle etc

Maybe before you start taking more things apart - WD40 the drive belts and bearings at the front of the engine and run down the road make sure it's not some sort of squeal from these.... Also does it change pitch at all with throttle position, i.e. can you play a tune by lightly coming on and off the throttle pedal?
