Just a quick question..is it possible to disconnect, disable, remove, totally do away with the rear diff actuator on my Colorado.. ive never used it in years the trucks done 260,000 miles and drives perfect.... any thoughts..on inspection the actuator casing and internals have had a good whallop been like it a while by the looks of it. Truck still drives perfect. Thanks |

Hi, and welcome to the site.
If the Diff Lock Actuator is corroded and seized I would just leave it alone, it isn't going to do anything and it will prevent the lock being accidently engaged.
Something like this . . .
If you were to remove it completely (which usually entails drilling out the 'nose' with the gear wheel on the end) you will have a hole leading into the axle:
Inside the hole is the Rack that the actuator gear wheel turns to move the locker into mesh (it locks the N/S half Shaft Diff Pinion to the Crown Wheel - preventing the diff from working normally):
On the side of the diff is a cover . . . .
That covers the shaft that moves with the rack . . that moves the locker into mesh . . . . . :
Without the diff lock actuator in place there is nothing to prevent the diff locker pinion sliding from side to side and going in and out of mesh - with very bad consequences.
It is actually possible to lock the mechanism in the 'open' position, but it would require some Engineering . . .
Above the Diff Lock Actuator is a Detector Switch:
This bears on the shaft that the Locker pinion is attached to which has a narrow section so that the switch is 'off' when the locker is disengaged.
If you were to turn-up a threaded plug that matched the switch thread, and if this had an (e.g.) 8mm tapped hole through it, it would be possible to screw a bolt down into the narrow section on the shaft where it would prevent the shaft from moving. You would need a lock nut on the bolt thread for security but then all you would need would be a blanking plate to cover the hole where the Diff Lock Actuator goes and there you are - all removed .
Personally, I would just leave it alone .
I got a bit carried away there .
