Hi all thanks for the info herein. Haven't tried solution to squeal yet, spring stretching, but this certainly sounds like my problem. It does occur all the time the engine is running though, but, listening on fast tickover, using a stick on the fuel pump and associated lines, seems to point to this being the problem. Well part of it. The other part of the problem I have, is linked on other posts about starting difficulties. With a full tank, there does not seem to be a problem unless parking with the nose uphill. When the fuel level is low parking on the level, the fuel seems to be draining back to the tank. It takes a fair bit of cranking before she'll start, or, she starts and then stops after 3 or 4 seconds. Absolutely sure it is fuel starvation. Generally parking with the nose downhill she starts and runs without stopping. Both issues started at the same time.
Does anyone know if these are, could be, linked? Could it be that the pump needs changing or maybe air is getting in somewhere, allowing the fuel to drain back to tank.
145000 miles, 2001 model with KDJ 3.0l engine
Any help or advice would be very welcome
Happy New Year!

Hi all,
Good thread! Apologies for resurrecting it.
Having suffered with this ailment for a few months I tackled it on my 3.0TD this morning. So armed with a cuppa and a 14mm spanner I took out the 'bolt' but found there was no spring inside! I've had the beaut for 3.5 years and only noticed squel about 4 mnths back. I guess that there has to be a spring there or perhaps someone took it out before me! Any thoughts anyone?
Cheers[/q
did u replace the spring and has the sqeal gone cos i got no spring either. |
spring is there just dont do wot i did and undo the 14 mm bolt and take the 17mm bolt with it as wen u open it looks like no spring.
just open 14mm bolt on its own and the spring is there and remove and stretch to double its size and replace as this worked for me.
if for some reason you replace and go start your car and no start like battery dieing dont panic just pump your fuel pump and will start first time.
p,s went to toyota for replacement spring only to find it dont fit as to wide for 14mm banjo nut.
hope this helps |

OK, so the noise has gone and the car starts beautifully again, and, keeps running. Cause was not the non-return valve spring but the 'O' ring on the filter had split. This allowed air into the system and therefore allowed fuel to run back to tank when on level, or nose up slope. It also caused fuel to be pumped out when the engine was running, so poorer fuel consumption, which was another symptom.
So if the spring stretching doesn't work, check the filter 'O' ring seal. In fact check that first..
Car is happy and so am I. |

on top of the injector pump is a banjo bolt on the fuel return side which contains a spring loaded ball valve. the spring weakens causing the ball bearing to resonate. i removed the bolt and took the ball and spring out. then i stretched the spring slightly and replaced. the spring is similar to that inside a ball point pen. put it all back together again and hey presto!
it's hard to believe that this could cause such a whistling noise coming up through the footwell but it does (did).
i take no credit for solving this. i went to an australian forum which put me onto a U.S. forum then to a south african forum to get the answer!!

Thank you so much, nordic venture. I have been annoyed by this noise for the past 18 months. Finally got it sorted 2 days ago after reading hints/posts (9 years ago!) from this wonderful forum with wonderful people. I also love the detailed descriptions by Auspuff and the pictures by regthing. Thanks again.
Wow! More than happy...! |
[b][b]just removed the banjo bolt as requested only to find no spring at all as another member stated on page 3 about the landcruiser speal as he also is missing as a spring .
my question is when i get a new spring do i just drop it in the bolt hole and replace the bolt.

I read about the cure for the high pitched squeal a good few years ago. AS expected, the stretched spring has returned to it's shorter length, hi squeal, so just cured it by stretching again, BUT what I really need is a replacement spring and ball bearing. Anyone know the part number. Elliot at Totota Telford has very helpfully sent me the Toyota parts diagram. Reference number is unfortunately the assmbly ref. 22160, anyone know either if the spring and ball are available, or the specs ., they must be bog standard. Perhaps the injection pump maker has the spares ?? Any ideas anyone ??. |

Hi guys, had the same squealing noise driving me crazy, after a lot of investigating i realized it came from the exhaust, changed all three rubber mounts, now the squeal is gone, old rubber mounts were stretched, simple and cheap fix woohoo |

I just did the spring stretch again a the squealing came back, but I dropped the spring and it's nowhere to be seen! PANIC set in, so I found this tread which I remember help me the first time around, and I've read that some of you guys didn't even have a spring at all, so I'm less concerned, but ultimately what does it do/not do as a result of having no spring? Will it run rich, or struggle to start?
Cheers

Well 15 years on from this post - if you are still out there @nordic venture - thank you
I too had taken my KZN185 surf to 3 garages, a 4x4 "specialist" and a transmission specialist all to no avail. then thanks to the internet gods, forums from when the internet was awesome i found this nugget - and all sorted! cant beleive it honetly, months of putting up with it solved in 5 minutes
I literally signed up here just to thank you and share a video i made for future victims of this curse here - youtu.be/nqNRPxsVI9o
