Having read loads of scare stories on the big end bearing problems with some of the 24valve engines. Is anyone aware of a similar problem with the non turbo 1HZ engine? I have a hzj75 pickup of 1998 vintage.

Hi,
Having owned and driven heaps of these in Australia, I have never experienced or heard of any problems with b/e bearings on these engines.
They really are 'bullet proof' and very long lasting.
Regular servicing and scheduled timing belt changes= no problems.

The 1HZ don;t appear to suffer big end failures. Only the 1HD-T and 1HD-FT. If you're at all concerned, drop the sump and take a look, it's not a big job.
